Sporting Goods Industry Dynamics Cover

The first volume of this print-only book (230 pages) traces the origins and development of sports participation and sports lifestyles over the centuries. It outlines the dynamics of the sector and provides the latest data on the state of the industry and its prospects. It discusses the history and the changing role of trade associations and trade shows. It then analyzes the history and transformation of Adidas, Nike and more than 20 other big or fast-growing sports brands, as well as groups such as Pentland, Amer Sports and VF Corp., showing how they overcame challenges and grew sales and profits.

The analysis will continue in the second volume, which is due to come out in March 2025. It will bring more brands and many sports retailers under the loop to cover all the stages of the supply chain, including manufacturers and distributors. It will also provide some useful tips and examples of best performance and failure – especially in recent years – in areas such as investment, financing, leadership, governance, sourcing, diversification, digitalization, marketing, international distribution, multi-channel retailing and the customer experience. This book is also an interactive project: The readers of the first volume are invited to contribute to the second volume with some of their own insights on these topics.

The author and publisher of the book, Eugenio Di Maria, is a well-known international business reporter who has covered the sporting goods and outdoor sector for over 40 years, notably as the founder, publisher and former editor of Sporting Goods Intelligence Europe and The Outdoor Industry Compass, which changed ownership five years ago. He has conducted many market research projects and run an MBA course on the international sporting goods market. At ISPO Munich, he will stage a 45-minute conference on Dec. 3 at 14:00 on the Yellow Stage (Hall B2) to present the book.

EDM Publications, publisher of SGI Europe and the Compass, will have a copy of the book’s first volume available for consultation and orders at its ISPO stand (B2-638). The two volumes of the book can be ordered as a package in euros or dollars through a dedicated website, www.sportsgoods-dynamics.com, which has more information on contents, pricing, and benefits. A 20% discount is offered for orders of three copies or more and for smaller orders placed before Dec. 6, 2024.
